Lost Patents, RIM Will Pay Royalties to Nokia?
Research In Motion (RIM) have to accept the bitter truth, fell from patent fight with Nokia. Initially, Nokia accused pembesut BlackBerry violated patents related to wireless local access network technology or WLAN. According to the results of arbitration, there is evidence that RIM had violated the contract. This news has been decided since 6 November, but was not published until Wednesday (28/11) yesterday by Reuters.
Impact, RIM should stop selling products that use WLAN technology if it does not reach a new royalty agreement with the Finnish company. But analysts say RIM will likely seek a royalty agreement with Nokia to prevent the risk of the sales ban.
"This decision will have an impact on the financial side is significant, because all BlackBerry devices supporting WLAN," said IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo. "If the sales ban imposed, it would be a major blow for RIM because they have to manage the transition to a new software platform BlackBerry 10," adds an analyst Pete Cunningham at Canalys. Until now, RIM has not given his official response about the steps that will be taken regarding this case.
Before winning this patent dispute, Nokia sent complaint letters to the three courts: the United States, Britain and Canada as well. This is done to strengthen the outcome of the trial. For Nokia, patent royalties is able to generate annual revenues of 500 million euros, or about Rp 6, 2 trillion.
